Half A Chance

Half A Chance by Cynthia Lord
Published by Scholastic Press

An evocative, beautiful and powerful story set in New Hampshire where we meet Lucy, a budding photographer, who is trying to find her way with photography, with a new home and with new friends. Ms Lord uses a photo scavenger hunt to setup Lucy’s new life. The contest requires each person to capture an image that illustrates words and phrases and Ms Lord wrote a corresponding chapter for each one. As Lucy searches for the appropriate image, she learns something about herself and life along the way. Loons and dementia also play important roles in Lucy’s life as well. Half a Chance is Ms Lord’s best middle grade fiction to date which is saying a lot.

Programming hint: Pair this book with one on Loons and create a STEM program on Loons & the environment.
